Current

Current is a water innovation hub based in Chicago, with a mission to accelerate water innovation, solve pressing water challenges locally and globally, and grow an inclusive blue economy here in Chicago and in the Great Lakes region.

To achieve this mission, we need to create a diverse and inclusive water workforce at all levels. However, we know that the CPS curriculum does not specifically cover water. To bridge this gap, we develop programs for K-12 students and pilot job training programs for adults. Our Blue EDU water-STEM programs (including virtual curriculum and in-person summer camps and classes) aim to build the next generation of water leaders. These programs center environmental awareness and stewardship as part of the learning process, with an emphasis on tackling real-world STEM challenges. River Lab (our high school program) specifically introduces students to careers in water science, connecting them with people working in the field – these include researchers, engineers, and hydrologists.

Current hopes to expand our partnerships with youth serving organizations to create a more sustainable and scalable STEM education model, and to engage more students in a fast-growing industry, preparing them for high-quality careers and family supporting jobs in the future.
