Community / Organization

MAPSCorps (Meaningful, Active, Productive Science in Service to Communities) is a non-profit organization that provides youth from high-poverty communities meaningful employment opportunities and hands-on STEM training through a comprehensive, technology-based community asset mapping program. The organization has provided meaningful summer job opportunities for over 1000 youth. The MAPSCorps' mission is to train youth to produce high-quality data about community assets that everyone can use to improve the human condition. They strive to cultivate scientific minds, healthy people and invested citizens from the assets of communities. MAPSCorps pairs high school students with science-oriented college students in teams to collect and classify data about all public-facing businesses and organizations in a community using a mobile application. Participants learn and apply the scientific method, and use data they collect to address questions raised by the community where they work. At the end of the summer program, all youth participate in the MAPSCorps Scientific Symposium, presenting their work for deliberation and comment to researchers, policymakers, family and community members.
