The Design4Democracy (D4D) project aims to develop, test, document and share a model for interdisciplinary challenge-based learning by engaging students in the design of a student-owned civic media engagement lab. In the process, students will be invited to unleash their civic imagination and envision how such a lab can be used to build participatory agency among themselves and their local communities.
The project consists of three components:
↳ Professional development for teachers in challenge-based learning design.
↳ A series of participatory design workshops guiding design students from Senn through a design thinking process to develop a spatial and conceptual vision for their lab.
↳ An open, educational toolkit to aid and inspire other student teams to claim, design and build in-school spaces that support belonging, equity and creativity.
↳ Convergence will mentor Senn HS students as they create a brand new, student-owned civic engagement lab built within an already reserved space at Senn. The students will design the space as well as create the vision for how the space will be used.
↳ Convergence will develop new pedagogical tools and challenge-based design structures that can help students manage and persevere through complex projects.
↳ Convergence will provide professional development for Senn HS teachers in developing real world challenge-based design units.
↳ Convergence will produce an open, educational toolkit to aid and inspire other student teams to claim, design and build in-school spaces that support belonging, equity and creativity.
This is a collaboration between Covergence Design Lab at Columbia College Chicago and Senn High School.
